1963 – A Movement Begins

The Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act marked a major step forward in rights and recognition for people with developmental disabilities. It inspired advocacy and laid the foundation for our work.

1981 – We Were Founded

We started as the Epilepsy Association of the Eastern Shore, focusing on helping individuals with epilepsy. As we listened to our community, our mission expanded to support people with a wide range of developmental disabilities.

1980s–1990s – Milestones Over the Years

• Launched the first Intensive Behavior Unit (IBU) on the Eastern Shore
• Created a scholarship program to help students with disabilities
• Opened satellite offices in Elkton and Easton
• Started a supervised apartment living program for independent living

2000s–2010s

• 2006: Moved our main office to East Main Street, Salisbury
• 2011: Added two new residential homes with support from the Weinberg Foundation and generous donors
• Expanded Personal Supports Program for in-home services
• 2012: Partnered to build Rivers Edge, affordable, accessible housing
• 2013: Changed our name to United Needs & Abilities (UNA)

2017 – A New Chapter

• Opened the UNA Training Center for skill-building and employment support
• Partnership with Division of Rehabilitation Services for employment services
• Awarded Workforce Development Grant
• Awarded Community Needs Grant
• Awarded Able2Work Grant
• Launching Traumatic Brain Injury services

We serve all nine counties of Maryland’s Eastern Shore, offering:

• In-home personal supports
• Training and employment programs
• Advocacy and community inclusion services
