Meet Our Staff
Michael Dyer, CPA, LGSW

Michael Dyer (Mike) has a Bachelors degree in Business Management/Accounting from the University of Maryland and a Master of Social Work degree (MSW) from Salisbury University. He is licensed in Maryland as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW). After a successful career in business, spanning over twenty years, which included owning and operating a CPA firm and managerial positions at Perdue Farms, Mike pursued his passion to serve others through human service administration. In 2009, Mike became the CEO of UNA. Mike has served as the Executive Director of the Worcester County Local Management Board and as an adjunct professor in the MSW program at Salisbury University. He is a board member of Maryland Association of Community Services (MACS), a Weinberg Fellow, former President of the Delmarva Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants and former Vice-Chair of the Maryland Association of Local Management Boards. Mike and his wife Ellen have five children (four live in Salisbury) and seven grandchildren.

Support Service Specialist/LISS Coordinator - E-mail - Phone Extension: #118
Mrs. Anita Disbrow serves United Needs & Abilities as the Support Program Specialist/LISS Coordinator. In this position she is our lead on Vocational Services and in the Administration of the LISS Program. Beginning her career in servicing people with disabilities as a Special Education Teacher in 1977, she has held many positions throughout the years including, but not limited to, Direct Caregiving, Job Coach, Trainer for Employment Opportunities, Person Center Planning Facilitator/Trainer, Consumer Financial/Home Management Instructor, Consultant, Program Development and Grant Writing Manager for Community Support Programs, Advocate, Facilitator of Support and Advocacy Groups, School Principal, Support Broker for the New Directions Waiver and most recently a Resource Coordinator from Queen Anne’s County. While holding undergraduate degrees in Human Development and Education, she is currently pursuing graduate studies for a dual degree in Organizational Leadership and Social Work. While Mrs. Disbrow has a passion for her work and is dedicated to serving people with disabilities, she states her greatest accomplishments include raising four children (one of which has a disability) and now being a grandmother while being married to her college sweetheart for more than 35 years.
Jose Balea, M.D.

Dr. Balea was born in Cuba and grew up on the eastern shore of Maryland. He pursued his premedical studies, graduating from the Catholic University of America in Washington DC. He earned his medical degree from Centro de Estudios Tecnicos (CETEC) in Santo Domingo. Dr. Balea completed his post graduate medical studies and certification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and North Shore/Cornell Medical Center in Manhasset, New York. Dr. Balea has worked in the not for profit healthcare sector since 1991. Dr. Balea was past Director of the Wicomico County Medical Society, and has served as part-time instructor of anatomy and physiology at WORWIC Community College. He serves in the region on the Board of Directors of several not for profit organizations.

Julie is an Eastern Shore native who earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Affairs from The George Washington University in Washington, DC. She studied Spanish for six years and, although rusty, can still communicate in Spanish today. Despite the fact that her education is rooted in the areas of history, economics, and political science, her two true passions have always been writing and travel. She has authored two blogs, one unpublished novel, and hundreds of newsletters. Julie lives in Salisbury with her husband, daughter, and their goofy rescue dog.
Amie K. Young, CPA
Chief Financial Officer - E-mail - Phone Extension: #114
Amie has her Bachelors degree in Accounting from Florida State University and her Masters in Accounting and Financial Management from Keller Graduate School of Management. She is a licensed CPA, and began her career at the Ann Storck Center, a non-profit helping children and adults with developmental disabilities in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Amie then worked in corporate accounting for a few years prior to being relocated to the Eastern Shore of Maryland when her husband, Tim, received an offer to be the Head Groundskeeper for the Delmarva Shorebirds. Amie was very involved with the American Women’s Society of Certified Public Accountants (AWSCPA) South Florida affiliate, even serving as their President for the 2012-2013 term. She is very excited to be working at UNA and doing her best to make a difference to those we serve. Amie and her husband, Tim, have a young son, two dogs and two cats and reside in Fruitland.

Program Director - E-mail - Phone Extension: #115
Whitney has been providing case manager services since 2010 in the state of Maryland with experience with the homeless population, individuals who suffered from drug and or alcohol addiction, along with serving persons with disabilities. She obtained her Bachelors of Arts in Social Work from Salisbury University in May 2010. Whitney has been a residential staff with United Needs & Abilities since February 2008 and since September 2013, she became a Program Coordinator. Currently, she is attending Wilmington University in pursuit of a Masters of Science in Administration of Human Services. She resides in Princess Anne with her young son.

Shavera is a graduate a University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) with Bachelors of Science in Biology and Minor in Chemistry. Since 2008, she has been working with adults with disabilities as a residential aide and for the past two years has been a program coordinator. Born and raised in Crisfield, MD, Shavera now resides in Salisbury, MD.

Shannon graduated from Delaware Technical and Community College in 1999 with an Associate Degree in the Science of Nursing. Her nursing experience includes Med-surgical, Oncology, Correctional, Nursing home (staff nurse, QA, MDS, Infection Control), and DDA. She has been employed with United Needs & Abilities as a Delegating Nurse/Case Manager since June 2015.

Jamie Sherell James
Administrative Medical Specialist II - E-mail - Phone Extension: #116
Jamie Sherell Wallop graduated from Wicomico High School in General Studies and Child Care Development I & II. She has been working in Healthcare for nine years: as an Adult Med Instructor, House Counselor, and most recently Medical Transport. Her work experience extends to Dove Pointe and Humanim Inc. Then, in late 2015, while pursuing her Certification in Phlebotomy at Wor-Wic Community College, she became Administrative Medical Specialist II at United Needs & Abilities, Inc. She is a native of Salisbury, MD, the youngest of three siblings and the daughter of Pastor James H. James and First Lady Florence R. James.

Sharmaine has a Bachelors degree in Human Services/Substance Abuse and Addiction Counseling from Sojourner-Douglas College. With over 15 years of experience working with adults with disabilities, she has been working at United Needs & Abilities, Inc. for 13 years as Transportation/Training Coordinator. She resides in Salisbury, MD with her two kids and three grand-children.

Presently, our volunteer board is extremely diverse and consists of people from all walks of life, namely, accounting, legal, real estate, insurance, medical, as well as persons with epilepsy and their family members. While we are anxious to identify potential volunteers throughout the Eastern Shore, we have a particular need for representatives from Queen Anne's county.
